How Long Do Composite Decks Last?

A deck is an extension of your home. It’s the perfect place to relax and spend time with loved ones on a nice day. While wood decks have been the norm for many years, composite decks have recently increased in popularity due to their long lifespans. In general, composite decks last three times longer than wood decks. On average, composite decks have a lifespan of anywhere between 25 and 30 years.

What Is a Composite Deck?

So, what exactly is a composite deck? A composite deck is made of wood fibers that are blended with plastic, allowing for a sturdier material. The whole board is typically coated with vinyl. While composite decks contain many of the same ingredients as pressure-treated lumber, they go through a more rigorous manufacturing process that results in greater durability and a longer lifespan.

Composite Decks vs. Wooden Decks

Even though they’re more expensive, there are a number of reasons why composite decks are better than their wooden deck counterparts. First and foremost, composite decks won’t rot or break down due to mold. If you notice mold on a composite deck, you can easily wash it away.

Also, while wood decks require continuous staining or painting in order to maintain their appearance, composite decks do not. With a composite deck, you don’t have to worry about a faded look. In fact, it can look brand new decades after it’s been built.

Lastly, composite decks are not prone to splinters, or elevated wood chips that can be uncomfortable on your skin. Wood decks, on the other hand, tend to break down and cause splinters after about 10 years.

Other Benefits of Composite Decks

Several of the other advantages of choosing composite for your deck project, include:

  • Low maintenance: Composite decks require much less maintenance than wood decks. All you have to do is apply a soft bristled brush with warm soapy water every 3 to 6 months to remove dirt, mud and soil.
  • Eco-friendly: Unlike wood decks which are made of hardwood trees and treated with chemicals, composite decks are comprised of recycling plants and free of chemicals, making them better for the environment.
  • Attractive look and feel: Most people agree that composite decks look and feel great. They come in all types of designs and colors. Plus the fasteners are hidden beneath the material so you won’t see them like you would with wood decks.
